The Becher Chase trends 2023 are a great way of whittling down the runners ahead of Saturday’s big Aintree horse race – which is also run over the unique Grand National fences.

Becher Chase Trends 2023: Last Year’s Winner Ashtown Lad Is Back For More

Saturday’s Becher Chase 2023 is one of the big weekend horse racing highlights as the Aintree 3m2f race is run over the tricky Grand National fences.

Twelve months ago we saw the Harry Skelton-ridden Ashtown Lad win the race – returning at 5/1 with the best horse racing betting sites – and he’s back to defend his crown.

This Dan Skelton runner has been popular in the 2023 betting pre-race and is rated only 2lbs higher than last year. Ashtown Lad will be looking to become the first back-to-back Becher Chase winner since Walk In The Mill in 2018 & 2019.

Being run over the National fences then the race is often thought as of a guide to the Grand National in April. However, since 2004 only Silver Birch has gone onto win the Merseyside Marathon after winning the Becher Chase.

Prior to 2004, we did see Amberleigh House win both in 2001 and 2004, while Earth Summit did it the other way round. He won the 1998 Grand National first and then added the Becher Chase the following season.

So, to help find the winner of Saturday’s big Aintree race – we’ve listed the key Becher Chase trends 2023 below.

Becher Chase Trends Tell Us Horses Carrying 10st 12lbs Of Less Do Best

With 76% of the last 21 Becher Chase winners carrying 10st 12lbs or less, then this is a good cut-off point when looking at the weights.

Last year’s winner Ashtown Lad had 11st 5lbs, so did show it’s still possible to carry a bigger weight to victory, but before each winner between 2018 and 2021 had 10st 8lbs or less.

While in the last 10 runnings, we’ve seen 80% of the winners carry 10st 12lsb or less.

Look For Horses That Have Raced No More Than Once This Season

Coming into the Becher Chase with no more than one run that season is the next positive to look for.

This Becher Chase trend has popped up in 17 of the last 21 renewals (81%).

Respect The Nigel Twiston-Davies Stable

With six wins in total, that include with the former Grand National winner Earth Summit in 1998 and his first in 1993 with Indian Tonic. So anything trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies runs has to be respected.

His most recent Becher Chase winner came in 2017 with the popular Blaklion, who was also a former Cheltenham Festival winner (RSA Chase, 2016). Twiston-Davies also won the Becher Chase with Hello Bud twice – in 2010 and in 2012, when the horse remarkably won aged 14.

This year, the Nigel Twiston-Davies yard have Undersupervision entered.

Previous Experience Of The Grand National Fences Is A Plus

With the Becher Chase run over the unique Grand National fences, then it’s no shock having previous experience over these obstacles is a plus.

67% of the last 21 winners had tasted the fences in the past.

The Becher Chase Trends Suggest Horses Aged 8+ Have The Best Record

Age is worth looking at too when ploughing through the Becher Chase trends. In the last 21 runnings, there have been 15 winners aged 9 or older (71%).

However, we can increase this percentage further with 90% of the last 21 winners aged 8 or older. Only Vieux Lion Rouge (7) and former Grand National winner Silver Birch (7) have bucked this trend.

How Has The Becher Chase Favourite Fared?

The Becher Chase betting favourite has won 24% of the last 21 runnings (5), while we’ve seen 10 market leaders placed during that time too.
