Ahead of Manchester United’s crucial Europa League clash with Barcelona at Camp Nou, we’re taking a look back on the last five meetings between the two clubs, in what has become a fierce European rivalry over time.
The two sides have met most frequently in the Champions League, and two of their biggest games against the Catalonia giants in finals of the competition, in which Barca won both.
Last 5 Meetings
Barcelona 3-0 Manchester United, April 16, 2019
The last time these two met was in the UCL quarter-final second leg, with United at the time 1-0 down going into the away match. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men were already down, and had hopes of scoring a crucial away goal to level the scores on aggregate.
However, they ran into a ruthless Lionel Messi who scored two goals in four minutes in a dominant first-half performance, before Philippe Coutinho wrapped up the game with a second-half strike.
Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona, April 10, 2019
In the first leg of the tie between the two in the UCL quarter finals back in 2019, it was a cagey affair at Old Trafford with the only goal of the game coming in the first half thanks to a Luke Shaw own goal.
David de Gea did well to keep United in it and made some important saves across the 90 minutes. Barca were nowhere near their best but they had one foot in the semi-finals at this stage, all they needed to do was avoid defeat at home.

Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United, May 28, 2011
Their last meeting before the 2019 quarter finals was the 2011 final of the competition, a game which United viewed as a chance to get some payback. Just two seasons after the Spaniards beat United to win the 2009 Champions League, they met again in the final and this time it was at Wembley, on home soil.
After winning the Premier League by nine points, Sir Alex’s side were confident of getting revenge from two years ago, however once again Messi and Barca had other ideas. Wayne Rooney cancelled out Pedro’s early goal with a superb strike, before Messi put the Spaniards 2-1 up. David Villa scored late on to all but confirm the win for the La Liga winners.

Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United, May 27, 2009
Two years prior to Barca’s London triumph, the final was held in Rome and United were defending their European title but they didn’t defend it well. Samuel Eto’o put the Spanish side up early on at the Stadio Olimpico, but it was Lionel Messi’s late header that ensured that Barca would win their third European trophy.

Manchester United 1-0 Barcelona, April 29, 2008
It seems like all doom and gloom in recent years for United against Barcelona, however they have enjoyed a little success against them. Paul Scholes’ strike in their UCL winning campaign was enough to settle the whole of their second leg, to send United into the final of the competition.
It was the Paul Scholes bullet that secured the Red Devils’ first win over the Catalonians in 10 years, setting them well on their way for glory in Moscow. United went on to lift the trophy after beating Chelsea on penalties.
