Barcelona president Joan Laporta remains heavily interested in bringing Ruben Neves to the Camp Nou and is making progress on the deal, despite Xavi wanting to look elsewhere at other targets.
The 26-year-old was of interest to the Spanish giants last summer, and has emerged as a target once again following the announcement of Sergio Busquets’ departure at the end of the season.

Laporta maintains a close relationship with Neves’ agent Jorge Mendes, and is keen to bring the Portugal international to Barca, but Xavi isn’t convinced he fits his style of play.
Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is Xavi’s first choice, but the club are asking for over €70 million, which is out of Barca’s budget.
It’ll be another summer of financial issues for Barcelona who are in need of selling players and reducing wages once again. They have been unable to register the new contracts given to Gavi and Ronald Aurajo, due to being in excess of their spending limit.
However the handy thing about Mendes, is that he can play a key role in keeping the cost of any transfer to Barca down, as they grapple with La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.
