It is no surprise to see seven-time Ballon D’or recipient Lionel Messi handed the shortest price across football betting sites. The 35-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down for PSG this season, and has dispelled any doubts from his first season in France by racking up 30 goals involvement in 27 games.

Of course, a fairytale tournament in Qatar to the reach that fabled World Cup final against France was perhaps the crowning moment across a glittering career, and leading his nation to become world champions should be enough see him claim an eighth Ballon D’or.

However, Kylian Mbappe also enjoyed an era-defining tournament, finishing as the Golden Boot winner and becoming only the second player in history to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. The 24-year-old has plenty of time to win a Ballon D’or once his fellow PSG teammate has hung up his boots, but should the Frenchman play a starring role in the club’s pursuit of a first Champions League trophy, he may well have a claim to this year’s award.

Current holder Karim Benzema has drifted out to 18/1 at the time of writing, with the Real Madrid striker behind La Liga newcomer Robert Lewandowski in the race for the Pichichi. Nevertheless, Los Blancos registered a dazzling display at Anfield, coming from two goals down to win 5-2, courtesy of two goals from their club captain and current Ballon D’or recipient.

However, perhaps the most notable market movers are Napoli’s Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who have both emerged as legitimate contenders for this year’s award.

The former has enjoyed a spectacular breakthrough year in Italy, helping Napoli move 13 points clear at the top of Serie A and move within touching distance of a first league title since 1990. The Georgian is a traditional wide player in every sense, donning socks half way up his shin while dancing and tip-toeing his way past defenders with ease, reminiscent of George Best’s fleet-footed talents.

As for Rashford, there is little more to say other than he has been the comeback player of the year. Following a dismal year last term where he clocked in with just five goals, the arrival of Erik Ten Hag has rejuvenated his career and the 25-year-old is oozing confidence, with a current run of 10 goals in as many games.

United have a Carabao Cup final on the horizon this weekend, while they also remain in contention for the Europa League, Premier League and FA Cup – could Rashford make a claim to the Ballon D’or this year? Perhaps.
