Australia get their 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign underway against Group B bottom seeds India in Al Rayyan on Saturday morning, in what will be the tournament’s second match after Qatar‘s opener against Lebanon on Friday evening.
The Aussies are largely expected to top their group with ease, however as was seen in the 2019 edition of the tournament when they were pipped to top spot by Jordan – it’s easier said than done.
Graham Arnold’s side come into this one off the back of four successive victories in all competitions, most recently besting Bahrain in a friendly last week, while the Indians boast just one win from their last four matches.
Led by all-time leading appearance maker and goalscorer Sunil Chhetri, the South Asia side opted against playing an official friendly in the lead-up to the tournament, with their last fixture coming in the form of a 3-0 defeat to Qatar in a World Cup qualifier in November.
