With qualification for European football now a genuine possibility, Villa’s mega-money owners are sure to be making preparations to bolster the squad ahead of the summer transfer window.

The club have managed to register more points than current league leaders Arsenal since the turn of the year, and sit level on points with fifth-place Tottenham at the time of writing.

All but one of their remaining five fixtures feature teams in the top half, but having claimed huge scalps in recent weeks including a memorable 3-0 triumph over in-form Newcastle, the Villa Park faithful will be confident they can pip Spurs to a Europa League spot come the end of the season.

With a potentially momentous, and unexpected season to prepare for next year given they were 15th at Christmas, the latest Aston Villa transfer news sees Unai Emery eyeing a reunion with Matteo Guendouzi.

That is according to French outlet L’Equipe, who report that the European hopefuls have reignited their interest in the Mareseille midfielder, having enquired about a potential transfer when Emery took over in January.

The duo worked together for several years while at Arsenal, and the Spaniard may have a significant role to play should the 24-year-old move on come the summer having overseen 66 of his appearances while in north London.

Guendouzi famously exited the club after falling out of favour with current manager Mikel Arteta, who dismissed the typically fiery midfielder following a slew of on-pitch disciplinary issues.

He has regained some form while in his native France, registering 10 goals and 28 assists since arriving in Ligue 1 two seasons ago.

When asked whether rumours linking him with an exit in January were genuine, he told RMC Sport: “It’s true that I had requests this winter, a few proposals from clubs, but I didn’t feel like leaving, I wanted to finish the season.”
