Aston Villa opened their account in the Europa Conference League with a 3-2 defeat away at Legia Warsaw in Group E.

The visitors found themselves behind after just three minutes when Pawel Wszolek found the net, but Jhon Duran quickly equalised just moments later with Villa’s first goal of the campaign.

Duran made it consecutive games with a goal following his first for the club on Saturday against Crystal Palace which sparked a remarkable comeback and inspired the team to victory.

Ernest Muci nudged the hosts back in front after 26 minutes before Lucas Digne levelled the scores once again with less than ten minutes until the interval with an inch-perfect volley.

Muci added his second of the game six minutes after the restart which proved to be the final goal of the encounter, sending Warsaw joint-top of Group E with HSK Zrinjski Mostar after beating AZ Alkmaar 4-3.

According to the best Conference League betting sites, the Villans remain the outright favourites to win the competition but their odds have taken a hit following their surprising defeat on Matchday 1.

Unai Emery’s side are aiming to become the next English club to win the title following West Ham’s triumph last season, which earned them a place in this year’s Europa League despite fighting for Premier League survival.

2023/24 marks the first season in Europe for Villa since they lost in the UEFA Cup play-off round in 2010 and there is still plenty of time to right tonight’s wrongs.
