In 2021, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was desperate for an attacking midfielder as part of his Arsenal rebuild. James Maddison was one of the names on that list but Arsenal thought he was too expensive. Arsenal opted for Martin Odegaard instead who had recently had a loan spell at the club.

Although, Maddison joined Spurs in the summer for £40m, it is understood that at the time Leicester were asking for £60m for Maddison. Arsenal were put off by that figure and permanently signed Odegaard for £30m from Real Madrid.

Both decisions ended up working well as Odegaard has just signed a new five-year contract with the club. He was also made captain in the beginning of last season. He almost led Arsenal to a surprise Premier League title but Arsenal stumbled in their last few games which crowned Man City champions instead.

As for Maddison, his footballing abilities wasn’t enough to keep Leicester in the Premier League but he’s been key to Tottenham’s amazing start to the season following his summer move. He picked up the Premier League player of the month award for August. 4 goal involvements for him so far this season.

Arsenal and Tottenham go head-to-head this Sunday in the 208th league North London derby which you can watch live on Sky Sports at 4:30pm.
