Arsenal are closing in on their second signing this summer, as Fabrizio Romano has confirmed a second bid from the Gunners for Jurrien Timber.

Arsenal’s first bid of £30m was rejected by Ajax earlier this week, with the Dutch side valuing their versatile defender closer to the £50m mark.

The 22-year-old defender impressed in the Eredivisie last season and garnered attention from some of the top teams in the Premier League such as Manchester United and Arsenal.

It seems Arsenal will beat United in the battle to sign Timber ahead of next season, with an improved bid of £38m submit to Ajax on Monday morning.

Timber has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal and the player has been clear that he loves the project that Mikel Arteta is building at the Emirates.

It seems like a matter of when rather than if Timber will sign for Arsenal this summer now and the Ajax starlet’s new contract would see him earn double what he is on at Ajax right now.

Arteta is looking to strengthen his back line before Arsenal make their return to the Champions League next season, after William Saliba missed the last ten games of the campaign with a back injury.

The Gunners aren’t just strengthening their defence this summer, as Kai Havertz is set to be announced as an Arsenal player in the next few days for a fee of £65m from Chelsea.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Declan Rice has also been a very public one this summer and it looks like they will have to fight off interest from Manchester City if they want to secure the West Ham captain.
