Arsenal’s pursuit of defensive depth this summer shows no signs of letting up, and new reports indicate that they have contacted Bayer Leverkusen over a move for Jeremie Frimpong.

Arsenal will be hoping to capitalise on a positive relationship with Leverkusen as of late, after Granit Xhaka’s imminent return to the Bundesliga was all but confirmed this week.

The Gunners have got their main man in midfield, surprised everyone by pouncing for Kai Havertz, and will complete the signing of Jurrien Timber this week.

Add to that contract renewals for Reiss Nelson and William Saliba, it is certainly a good week to be an Arsenal fan.

Although they are expected to turn their attention to outgoings by shifting some of the ‘deadwood’ over the coming weeks, everything points towards more business later in the window.

Further firepower up top has been touted as a possibility if an opportunity in the market should arise, but recent reports suggests Edu and Mikel Arteta are working to add further depth to the defence with another hugely versatile target.

Bundesliga expert Stefan Bienkowski says that Arsenal have already approached Leverkusen for Jeremie Frimpong, but talks remain at the early stages.

The 22-year-old has garnered the attention of several top clubs around Europe, and excelled as a full-throttle wing-back last season where he notched in nine goals and set up a further 11.

It would be interesting to see where and how Arteta chooses to deploy the Dutchman, particularly with new signing Jurrien Timber largely operating as a right-back. This may force Ben White back into a centre-back role, or even Timber into the midfield as he has done on numerous occasions for Ajax.

Then again, depth was their main pitfall as they run out of steam in last year’s title race, and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City is testament to the fact you can have multiple players competing for the same position.
