Arsenal have agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Granit Xhaka, as the midfielder departs the Emirates on a high after a rollercoaster few years.

Xhaka was always expected to depart Arsenal this summer and although his return to Germany was expected, the club to sign him has been up for debate since the beginning of the window .

Bayer Leverkusen have fought off all interest for Xhaka and they are set to complete the transfer for €25m, with an announcement expected to come imminently.

The midfielder has reportedly undergone medical tests for Leverkusen today and with personal terms agreed last week, the deal is all but completed.

Xhaka has certainly had a career of ups and downs in North London, after the Swiss midfielder was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy in 2019 when leaving the pitch in an outrage as fans booed him down the tunnel.

Since then however Xhaka has enjoyed some of the finest season’s in his career and he will eventually leave Arsenal as a fan favourite after seven years at the club.

The 30-year-old played 297 games for the Gunners and he became an essential part of Mikel Arteta’s engine room especially during his last season, as Arsenal managed a second place finish in the best season Xhaka played during his career.

With Arteta preparing for a return to the Champions League next season, it was no surprise to see the aging Xhaka replaced by the Gunners’ headline signing of the summer in Delcan Rice.

Arsenal have also brought in Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber this summer, as they look to go one place better than last season and challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
