Liverpool have begun the process of expanding their stadium this summer, as pictures have been released of the Anfield roof being taken apart.

After a disappointing season saw Liverpool finish the year in fifth place in the Premier League with no silverware, fans will be glad to have something to look forward to next season as Anfield undergoes an expansion.

The historic stadium is in the middle of an £80 million makeover that will see the ground be able to seat 7,000 more fans per game next season.

Although the expansion has been under way for some time now fans got a first glimpse today of the Anfield roof being lifted up, as a new stadium structure is to be fitted onto the existing Main Stand once the Anfield Road roof is out of the way.

Anfield’s new capacity will be taken to 61,000 seats once the expansion is complete, which takes the Reds to number four on the Premier League’s biggest stadiums.

Ahead of Liverpool for capacity will still be the London Stadium, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Premier League’s largest ground Old Trafford – which holds a whopping 74,140 fans.

Liverpool’s expansion will just about take their ground’s capacity to above Arsenal’s Emirates stadium however, which has a capacity of 60,260.

The new expansion comes at a poor time for Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp’s men will be competing in the Europa League next season after a disappointing league finish.

The absence of Champions League football will no doubt disappoint many on Merseyside next season, but with a new look stadium for next year the Reds still have something to look forward to.
