St Leger Betting Odds: Can Frankie Dettori Land Seventh St Leger On Arrest?
Frankie Dettori will ride in the St Leger at Doncaster this Saturday for the final time and we know that he’ll be looking to go out with another ‘flying dismount’ on the John Gosden-trained ARREST – having turned down the chance to ride the Wathnan Racing-owned 3 year-old Gregory as he hunts win number seven in the big Doncaster Group One.
Arrest was last seen winning winning the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in easy fashion (watch below) – a victory that was his 4th of his career from 8 runs. It was also the first time the horse had raced beyond 1m4f with the race over 1m 5 1/2f, which is a great sign the St Leger trip of an extra furlong will be within range.
Gregory, who Frankie decided not to ride, will be ridden by Kieran Shoemark.
Dettori Has Already Had A Top Season
Frankie, who retires at the end of this season, has already had a campaign to remember, with top wins in the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks, Ascot Gold Cup and York Ebor – so can he continue that run by taking the 2003 St Leger in his swansong ride in the race?

It was back in 1995 that we first saw Frankie Dettori winning the St Leger on the Godolphin horse Classic Cliche and he didn’t mess about by taking the contest the following year (1996) on the John Gosden-trained Shantou.
He did the double again in 2005 (Scorpion) and 2006 (Sixties Icon), then added Conduit (2008) and then most recently Logician (2019) to his St Leger CV.

John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien Hunt More St Leger Success
Trainer’s John Gosden (4) and Aidan O’Brien (5) have dominated the St Leger in recent times – winning 9 of the last 21 renewals between them.
Gosden has in total won the race 5 times and O’Brien 6 times, with their first successes coming in 1996 (Shantou, Gosden) and 2001 (Milan, 2001).
Gosden and O’Brien Well-Represented Again
The pair, once again, dominate the 2023 St Leger betting market, with John Gosden having the already mentioned Frankie Dettori mount Arrest one of his main hopes.
While the Newmarket handler also has Gregory and Middle Earth entered.
Aidan O’Brien will pin his hopes on his Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Continuous, and with 8 of the last 21 winners having taken in that York race, then it’s often a good guide (watch below).
The other O’Brien St Leger entries at this stage are his Irish Oaks winner Alexandroupolis, Tower Of London and Denmark.
Of the remaining 9 St Leger entries, Godolphin’s Chesspiece and the royal runner Desert Hero will be trying to spoil another Gosden/O’Brien party. The Queen won the St Leger in 1977 with Dunfermline, so can the King add to that?
