Use our Coral Gold Cup trends for Saturday’s Newbury race, which many will still know as the Hennessy Gold Cup. You can use these horse racing stats to find the best profile of past winners and narrow down the runners. Including a massive 90% age trend you can’t dismiss.
2023 Coral Gold Cup: Another Competitive Renewal In Prospect
This Saturday’s Coral Gold Cup is still a race many racing fans refer to as ‘the Hennessy’ and the 2023 renewal is all set to be just as competitive an event as years gone by.
You can see some of the best Coral Gold Cup winners since 2000, but it’s a contest that has seen the likes of Grand National winner Many Clouds, plus Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Native River, Bobs Worth and Denman all win during their careers.
12 months ago the Newbury crowd witnessed the Dan Skelton camp winning the prize for the first time as their Le Milos came home in front. While – did you know that champion trainer Paul Nicholls also rode the Hennessy winner (twice)?
The Ditcheat handler was in the saddle in 1986 (Broadheath) and 1987 (Playschool), plus has since gone onto win the race three times as a trainer. With Strong Flow (2003) and twice with Denman (2007 and 2009) – with the last of those wins billed as one of the greatest weight-carrying performances in the modern era.
This year’s Newbury handicap looks another typically strong and competitive renewal, but hopefully you can whittle down the runners using our key Coral Gold Cup trends.

Look For Horses Aged 8 Or Younger
With a massive 90% of the last 21 Coral Gold Cup winners aged 8 or younger this is great starting place when narrowing down the runners.
The last four winners have been aged 7 or 8 (2 each) and since 1968 there has only been one winner aged in double-figures – Diamond Edge, who was aged 10.
6 and 7 year-olds have the best record in recent times – winning 62% of the last 21 renewals. While 7 year-olds on their own have won 15 of the last 32 runnings (47%)
The fancied trio – Complete Unknown, Monbeg Genius and Mahler Mission are all aged 7.
A Top Three Finish Last Time Out Is A Plus
Next up is to look for a ‘top three’ finish last time out. This is because 71% of the last 21 Coral Gold Cup winners ticked this trend.
We can also take this Newbury stat a bit further with 52% of the last 21 winners coming here off the back of a win.
Of the fancied runners, a few that fallen down on both this ‘recent form’ stat are Stumptown (8th last time) and Monbeg Genius (pulled up last time).
67% Of The Last 21 Winners Carried 10st 13lbs Or More
Being a handicap then weight carried is worth looking at too. 67% of the last 21 winners carried 1o 13lbs or more – including last year’s winner Le Milos, who won with 11st.
That said, a small word of caution here as since 2017, we have actually seen four winners carry 10st 10lbs or less, so could this weight stat be turning the other way?
Previous Newbury Experience Helps
Having past experience at any track is often a plus in most races – and this is showcased again in the Coral Gold Cup. In the last 21 runnings, 14 winners had run at Newbury in the past, with nine winning at the Berkshire track too.
How Do The Coral Gold Cup Favourites Fare?
The Coral Gold Cup favourites have a good record in general, despite this being a very competitive race. 33% of the last 21 market leaders have won. with the average SP over that time being 10/1.
With 81% of the last 21 winners also returning 12/1 or shorter, then you don’t often have to look too far down the market to find the winner. Last year’s hero Le Milos was send off as the 9/2 favourite and other jollies to win recently were Native River (2016) and Total Recall (2017).
At this stage Complete Unknown, Monbeg Genius and Mahler Mission are heading the Coral Gold Cup betting.
Who Are The Best Coral Gold Cup Trainers?
Trainer Dan Skelton won the race last year and at this stage has Sail Away and Midnight River running as he looks to become the first back-to-back winning yard since Nicky Henderson, who won the race in 2012 and 2013.
Sticking with Nicky Henderson, the Seven Barrows handler has won the race three times since 2005, but he’s not got a runner this year.
Paul Nicholls has three wins to his name, and he’s got one of the big fancies in Complete Unknown.
Other winning yards in recent times are Grand National-winning trainers Venetia Williams and Jonjo O’Neill, plus the Tizzard camp, who have the 2021 winner Cloudy Glen (Williams), Monbeg Genius (O’Neill) and Eldorado Allen (Tizzard).
