Nicky Henderson Runners to Look For At The 2023 Cheltenham Festival
It certainly feels like the Nicky Henderson yard are in a bit of a transition period with just the one standout Cheltenham Festival banker to look forward to – but, in his defence, it is arguably the biggest fancy of the whole meeting – Constitution Hill – the red-hot favourite in the Champion Hurdle, which is a race Henderson has won a staggering 8 times before.
Their talented mare, Luccia, will be popular in the Mares’ Novice Hurdle on the Thursday, while Marie’s Rock, who landed the Mares’ Hurdle last year, will have a fair chance whichever race she targets – she’s entered in the Stayers’ Hurdle and the Mares’ Hurdle again.
Jonbon is another Henderson fancy in the Arkle Chase – the 2022 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runners-up has made a smooth switch to chasing and heads to the Festival 3-from-3 over the bigger obstacles.
Henderson’s former Arkle Chase winner Shishkin is another to note in the Ryanair Chase but is on a bit of a recovery mission after flopping in recent runs, including the 2022 Champion Chase. Finally, the Grand Annual Chase on the Wednesday is always a race pundits tend to link the Seven Barrows trainer too as it’s named in honour his father – Johnny Henderson – he’s won the race twice since 2006 (Greenhope and Bellvano).
