The 2023 Cheltenham Festival weather forecast continues to be in the news with a ‘cold spell’ hitting the UK. But Cheltenham’s clerk of the course, Jon Pullin, remains confident next week’s big-four day horse racing highlight will still get the green light.
Weather Has Already Claimed Some Horse Racing Fixtures This Week
Britain has seen a downturn in temperatures in recent days and as a result some midweek horse racing fixtures have been called off. The industry lost Newcastle on Tuesday due to snow, while some fixtures later in the week are in doubt too.
With these abandonments, it’s got Cheltenham horse racing fans a tad worried that the four-day meeting might be under threat.
The action at the Cheltenham Festival gets going on Tuesday 14th March – in just a week’s time.

Cheltenham Festival Officials Hopeful of Beating The Weather
However, despite the ever-changing weather forecast and the unwanted snow warnings Cheltenham track officials remain confident.
Clerk of the Course, Jon Pullin has started that he feels Cheltenham will be able to cope with the shivering conditions, with ground staff keeping a close eye on the forecasts.
Pullin added “There’s a risk of snow this week, nothing of any significant volume,” he said. “At the moment we may get longer spells of rain on Friday and Sunday, up to six millimetres on both days. There is uncertainty, so we will keep an eye on the forecast and react to it.”
Watering At Cheltenham Has Stopped
Cheltenham has, however, stopped any watering at the track after a dry February. With the expected rain/snow/sleet likely to hit the course over the next week they are preferring to let nature take its course.
The going all tracks (hurdles, chase and cross country) are either good-to-soft or good.
Cheltenham Festival Battered By High-Winds Drama in 2008
The Cheltenham Festival is also no stranger to ‘acts of god’. In 2008 day two of the Festival (Wed) was called off due to high winds battering the track. As a result, all that day’s races were rerouted to the Thursday in what turned out to be a bumper card.
While in 2001, the Festival was cancelled completely due to a foot and mouth outbreak around the country.
Horse racing fans will be hoping ‘Cheltenham 2023’ doesn’t get supplemented to this list.
