1000 Guineas Trends to Help You Find the Newmarket Winner
It’s the second English Classic of the new flat horse racing season this Sunday as the Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket follows on from the 2000 Guineas, which is run the day before on Saturday 6th May.
The 1000 Guineas is a race the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard have another fine record in – winning the prize 7 times since 2005 and will be pinning their hopes on their Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Meditate this time.
Frankie Dettori will also be riding in his last ever 1000 Guineas as the pocket Italian has announced his retirement from the saddle at the end of this season. He’s ridden 4 winners of this fillies’ Classic over the years (his most recent Mother Earth in 2021) and will be riding the Ralph Beckett-trained Lezoo this time.
You can see below our key 1000 Guineas trends to help you find Sunday’s big Newmarket winner.
What Date & Time Is The 2023 1000 Guineas?
đź“…Time/Date: 3:40pm (Sunday 7th May 2023)

19 Of the Last 21 Winners Finished in The Top Three Last Time Out
Okay, most of the 1,000 Guineas runners will fit the bill here, but this is still a good starting point to rule out the odd entry – even if they are likely to some of the bigger-priced horses.
57% Of Those Last 21 1000 Guineas Winners Won Their Last Race
Following on from the ‘top three’ stat, we can also note horses that won last time out with 57% of the last 21 1000 Guineas winners coming here off the back of a victory.
In fact, in a race like this you’d think it would be higher – the 2000 Guineas trends here have seen 81% of winners having won their last race.
Therefore, the 1000 Guineas stats here are 24% down on its Guineas counterpart run the previous day.
With that in mind, this is probably a stat to not take too much notice of.

76% Of Recent Winners Had Won Between 2-3 Times
Having won between 2 and 3 times in the past is the next thing to look for. The main players at the head of the betting – Tahiyra, Meditate and Mammas Girl are all fine here, with 2 or 3 wins each.
However, Godolphin’s Dream Of Love has only the one victory to her name, while Frankie’s ride – Lezoo – has already won four races.
Are Stalls 7 and 8 the Magic 1000 Guineas Stalls?
With 15 of the last 21 winners of the 1000 Guineas having been drawn between stalls 2-13, this is a decent stat to note.
But – it will, of course, still leave us with 12 runners.
However, the good news is that stalls 7 and 8 seem to be building up good records – winning 6 of the last 21 renewals, which equates to a 29% strike-rate.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien Is The 1000 Guineas Main Man
With seven past 1000 Guineas wins to his name, the Aidan O’Brien yard must be respected in this Newmarket Classic.
The first of those successes came in 2005 with Virginia Waters, with the most recent being Mother Earth in 2021.
O’Brien will pin his hopes this year on Meditate, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last time out at Keenland (watch below).
62% Of the Last 21 Winners Came From Outside The Top 3 In The Betting
Don’t be too worried if your fancy is not in the top three in the betting as 13 of the last 21 winners of the 1000 Guineas were found away from the top three in the market.
The last two winners – Cachet (16/1) and Mother Earth (10/1) further backed up this trend that bigger-priced horses can win this race. We also had a 14/1 winner (Hermosa) and 66/1 winner (Billesdon Brook) since 2018.
How Have the 1000 Guineas Stakes Favourites Fared?
Off the back of the last trend, it’s no shock that the 1000 Guineas favourites don’t have a great record. We’ve only seen 4 winning market leaders take the prize in the last 21 – with the most recent these in 2016 (Minding).
Therefore, the race is currently on a 6-year spell with no winning favourite.
