What is the Greek Lottery and How Can it be Played?
You definitely do not have to ‘go greek’ or go to Greece in order to play the Greek Lottery. Okay, so you can’t actually buy tickets for the Greek Lottery if you are based in the UK, but you can bet on the outcome which pretty much amounts to the same thing.
There are plenty of places where you can bet on the Greek Lottery in the UK and the good news is that these places are all thoroughly decent, safe and reliable UK sportsbooks and online casinos. You will be able to bet on all the top lottos from around the world at such sites, including the 49’s, German and Australian Lottery results. Here’s how to get in on the Greek Lottery.
How to Play the Greek Lotto
Like many countries across the globe now, Greece has gone a little bit ‘lottery mad’. There are several different lotteries now available in Greece, all drawn on different days of the week. The main ‘lotto’ draw is drawn on Saturdays and Wednesdays. There are other draws though, including the ‘Joker’, ‘Proto’ and ‘Extra 5’ lotteries, are drawn on Sundays.
So, you are likely to be asking yourself ‘if I bet on the Greek Lottery which lottery am I actually betting on?’. The answer to that question is very simple – you will be betting on the main lotto that is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday. The other lotteries that are drawn in Greece are not currently available for UK lottery betting.
The Greek Lottery is not one of the most generous or easy to win lotteries available, but that doesn’t really matter if you are in the UK as you will be betting on it as opposed to buying tickets for it. Like many global lotteries, the Greek Lottery is a ‘6 from 49’ draw where six balls are drawn for each Greek Lottery draw from the 49 that are available. A bonus ball is drawn too. Because of the dificulty of selecting the correct six numbers from 49, and because not everyone in Greece can afford a lottery ticket, wins are not common and the jackpot rolls over on a frequent basis.
The way to win the Greek Lottery (in Greece) is to have the six winning numbers. There are prizes also for matching five numbers plus the bonus ball, five numbers, four numbers and three.
In the UK though as you are betting on the Greek Lottery as opposed to buying a ticket for it, you are not eligible for any share of the jackpot, no matter how many times it rolls over. You will be given odds by the sportsbook or online casino offering Greek Lottery betting instead. It’s your option to choose to back any amount of numbers from one all the way to five. You will need for all the balls you back to be drawn in order to win.
The typical odds offered by sportsbooks is as follows:
Balls Matched | Odds |
5 | 100,000/1 |
4 | 10,000/1 |
3 | 700/1 |
2 | 66/1 |
1 | 6/1 |
As these are odds as opposed to jackpot dividends, the amount you win is dependent upon the size of your wager. For example, should bet £20 on three balls and your three numbers are among the six numbers drawn, you will win £14,000 (£20 x 700). You will get your stake back too, so your return will be £14,020.
Note that all sportsbooks that offer Greek Lottery betting will have ‘maximum payout’ rules when it comes to the amounts you can win, so make sure you check them out. If you back five numbers at £100 and win, don’t expect the bookies to pay out £10million!
What are the odds of winning when Greek Lottery online betting?
As the Greek Lottery is a typical ‘6 from 49’ lottery then it is fairly easy to work out the odds for any combination of winning numbers. For example, there is a 1 in 49 chance of one correct number being drawn. However, as six balls are drawn then the true odds are 6 from 49, which is about a one in eight chance.
To keep going with the maths we just multiply each possibility going forwards. If you have one ball right (6/49) then you have five chances of the next ball being right too (as there are five balls left to be drawn). There are also 48 balls remaining so your odds of getting that second ball correct is 5 out of 48. Multiply 6/49 and 5/48 to get the probability which comes out at about 1 in 78.
You can now put your calculators away though as your freinds here at SportsLens have done the rest of the mathematics for you.
Balls Matched | Probability |
5 | 1 in 317,814 |
4 | 1 in 14,125 |
3 | 1 in 921 |
2 | 1 in 78 |
1 | 1 in 8 |

Just a reminder here, there is no reason for you to get excited when you hear that the latest Greek Lottery prize fund has inched over the €200 million barrier. As you are betting on the lottery as opposed to buying a ticket for it, the size of the jackpot pool is of no consequence to you. The amount you win is set by the bookie that you have placed a bet on the Greek Lottery at.

It should be very easy for you to work out how to use the applet for the Greek Lottery at BoyleSports. The first step is to choose your numbers, from one all the way up to five. As you can see, for three, four and five numbers you can use the ‘Quick Pick’ options. The balls you pick will be shown in the ‘Selection’ box towards the bottom of the screen.
You will need to choose which draws you want to bet on. The two options are the main draw on Wednesday, and the main draw on Saturday. You can bet on both using the same set of Greek Lottery numbers if you so wish – hit the ‘Select All’ check box if you wish to do so.
Once you have all your numbers in place, set your stake. The odds offered will be displayed so you can easily work out how much you are likely to win if your bet is a winner. There is a green button at the bottom of the applet (not shown) labelled ‘Add to Betslip’. If you click this your bet will be added to your current betslip.
