What is the World Cup Golden Glove?
The World Cup Golden Glove award is given to the best goalkeeper of the tournament. It was introduced in 1994 and was originally known as the Lev Yashin Award, named after the legendary Soviet goalkeeper. The name changed to the Golden Glove in 2010.
It is the FIFA Technical Study Group that decide who wins the award. In the event of a tie, the winner is the keeper that has gone furthest in the competition, with saves made and minutes played, also used in a tiebreak situation. Though goalkeepers have their own award, they are also eligible for the Golden Ball award that is given to the World Cup’s best player.
In 2002, the German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won the Golden Ball as well as the Golden Glove. The only other goalkeeper to have come close to winning the Golden Ball, which was initiated in 1982, was another German. Harald Schumacher, won the Silver Ball in 1986, with Diego Maradona getting the Golden Ball.
Past World Cup Golden Glove Winners
There have been seven winners of the Golden Glove award since it was initiated in 1994. The identities of those seven award winners can tell us much about the Golden Glove odds for the World Cup on 2022.
Four of the seven winners played for teams that actually won the World Cup that year. Five were finalists and six played the maximum amount of games (four winners, one losing finalist and one third-place play-off winner). That indicates the keepers to follow on World Cup betting sites are those who reach the business end of the tournament.
Only one Golden Glove winner did not play the maximum amount of games and that was in the first time the award was given, before a precedent had been set. Looking at the statistics, it looks clear that the winner will represent a nation that will go the distance in the competition, which is reflected in the World Cup Golden Glove odds. Here are the seven previous winners.
- 1994 – Michel Preud’homme (Belgium)
- 1998 – Fabien Barthez (France)
- 2002 – Oliver Kahn (Germany)
- 2006 – Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)
- 2010 – Iker Casillas (Spain)
- 2014 – Manuel Neuer (Germany)
- 2018 – Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)
Leading World Cup Golden Glove Betting Contenders
In this section we’re going to look at some of the leading contenders in the Golden Glove odds for the World Cup. This is just one of many popular outright markets available on the tournament there. We have more on World Cup odds in general right across SportsLens. While an outsider could surprise us all, the likelihood is that the winner will come from one of the World Cup Golden Glove betting favourites.
Alisson Becker (Brazil)
The favourite in the World Cup Golden Glove betting is Brazil and Liverpool number one Alisson Becker. Available at 9/2 before the tournament, that’s in part down to his own quality and also his nation’s chances of lifting the World Cup.
Brazil are the clear tournament favourites with the top betting sites in the UK and, as we’ve demonstrated, the Golden Glove winner has (more often than not) come from the tournament winners. Brazil have not always had goalkeepers that have matched the quality of their outfield stars, but Alisson is one of the best players and will be crucial to their World Cup hopes.
Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)
Former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois is the reigning Golden Glove holder, having been given the award in 2018. Belgium reached the semi-finals and then won the third place play-off against England.
Courtois’ hopes of retaining his crown will surely depend on whether his nation can go deep into the competition again. The “Golden Generation” of Belgian football are ageing, especially in defence and they are only rated as ninth favourites to win the World Cup. As good as the Real Madrid goalkeeper is, Courtois might be overrated in the Golden Glove odds for the World Cup.
Emiliano Martinez (Argentina)
Brazil might be the favourites to win the World Cup, but it was Argentina that beat them in the final of the Copa America in 2021 on Brazilian soil. Emiliano Martinez was instrumental to that success, winning the Golden Glove award for that South American tournament.
The Aston Villa and ex-Arsenal keeper saved three penalties during the semi-final penalty shootout against Colombia and then kept a clean sheet in the final, as Argentina beat Brazil 1-0. With Argentina the second favourites to win the World Cup, there could be value in backing Martinez to receive more personal plaudits.
Hugo Lloris (France)
France national captain and Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris lifted the last World Cup with his country in 2018. That does not tell the full story, however. Lloris made a terrible error in the final that gifted a goal to Croatia, so there was never much chance that he would win the Golden Glove award.
Now aged 35, he’s still capable of producing astonishing saves, but also prone to error, particularly when tasked with using his feet. With France in poor form going into this tournament, Lloris should really be a bigger price in the World Cup Golden Glove odds.
Manuel Neuer (Germany)
Like Courtois of Belgium, Manuel Neuer is a previous winner of the Golden Glove award. He was crowned as the best goalkeeper of the 2014 World Cup, when Germany beat Argentina in the final in Brazil. Around that time Neuer was widely accepted as being the best goalkeeper in the world.
Some eight years later and now aged 36, the Bayern Munich keeper is still a quality performer but no longer stands out from his contemporaries. Germany are sixth favourites to win the tournament, which looks a little generous for them. Neuer’s Golden Glove odds for the World Cup should be bigger.
Unai Simon (Spain)
The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon is now firmly established as first choice for Spain. He was the starting goalkeeper for them when they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and then in the same summer, kept goal for the Spanish team in the men’s Olympic competition when they were beaten in the final by Brazil.
Simon saved penalties in the quarter-final shootout victory against Switzerland and then in the semi-final shootout defeat against Italy. That means he’ll be a formidable obstacle in the knockout phase of this tournament if a match must be decided on spot kicks. Simon’s World Cup Golden Glove odds look about right.
Jordan Pickford (England)
Jordan Pickford was one of the best performers at Euro 2020, as England reached the final. In seven games, Pickford kept five clean sheets, only conceding in the semi-final and final. In the Euros final, he saved two penalties in the shootout, as England were defeated against Italy.
Everything points towards Pickford’s Golden Glove odds for the World Cup being too big, except for the current form of the England World Cup squad this year. They have lost their defensive solidity, so it looks likely that Pickford will be busy but may not go far enough in the tournament to make an impression.
