Both those runners were ridden patiently in a race run to suit prominent types and Great Chieftain was also inconvenienced by trying to come form midfield. The change of headgear and subsequent gelding operation could also bring about improvement and the son of Gleneagles won’t be inconvenienced by this morning’s heavy rain. Dan Skelton, likes his mentor Paul Nicholls, has a fine record when using first-time cheekpieces, especially on horses who finished out of the frame on their latest start (i.e. fifth or worse). Since Skelton took out his licence, he’s won with 21 of the 103 qualifiers for a profit of £58.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. Three of the qualifiers were having their second start for the yard, with two winning (16-1 and 6-1) and the other running third (5-2). A LAW OF HER OWN, ex-Peter Fahey, was far from disgraced in finishing a 33-1 eighth of 18 in a Class 3 handicap hurdle at Cheltenham last month on his debut for Skelton and the step up to 2m4f could suit.
