ASCOT 1.35
MARVELLOUS MICK (system – Paul Nicholls, first-time cheekpieces, finished fourth or worse last time out)
Paul Nicholls has a cracking record with his runners in first-time cheekpieces and the value lies with those who finished fourth or worse on their latest start. Since the beginning of 2010, he’s won with 35 of the 144 qualifiers (24.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £51.01 to a £1 level stake at SP. Golden Son, the latest qualifier, won at odds of 10-1 at Kempton last month and perhaps MARVELLOUS MICK can follow suit.
ASCOT 2.10
HURLERONTHEDITCH (system – Kim Bailey, first run after a wind operation, handicap chases)
Kim Bailey has a 12 from 37 record with his handicap chasers on their first start back following wind surgery for a profit of £22.71 to a £1 level stake at SP. Last year, he had a four from six record on this angle and HURLERONTHEDITCH, the first qualifier in 2024, can keep the ball rolling. The eight-year-old tipped up at the last fence when 20 length son his return from a wind operation in early November and it’s safe to draw a line through his two subsequent defeats.
NAAS 3.10
SLUICE (system – Naas, 7f handicaps, stall 12+)
High-drawn runners typically enjoy an advantage in 7f handicaps at Naas and backing all those drawn in stall 12 or higher would have found 14 winners from 99 bets (since 2014) for a profit of £99.98 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.65, A/E = 1.83). SLUICE (stall 12 of 12) won a Down Royal maiden on heavy ground when making her juvenile debut and wasn’t disgraced when fifth in a Leopardstown Group 3 on her only other start. First-time out could be when to catch her and she looks worth a bet on her seasonal/handicap debut.
