Cheltenham Festival Day One: Are You Ready For The Roar?
The tape will go up on the 2024 Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday with the traditional curtain-raiser race – the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. It’s a contest that top Irish trainer Willie Mullins has a strong hand in – with both Tullyhill and Mystical Power – as he looks for his eighth success in the race.
On day one we’ve also the Arkle Novices’ Chase, where we get a chance to see some of the stars of the future on show. It could be Mullins again here as the Closutton handler looks for his sixth win in the race since 2015.
However, some hope for the other trainers in the Ultima Handicap Chase at 2:50pm as this is actually one of just seven Festival races Willie Mullins HASN’T won – he’ll be trying to put that right with Meetingofthewater, who was recently purchased by JP McManus.
The Champion Hurdle at 3:30pm is the big day one feature, but the contest this year has lost a bit of its sparkle with the current champ Constitution Hill on the sidelines. This leaves the way for another Mullins hot-pot in State Man to pick up the pieces.

Lossiemouth will be all the rage – yes, another Mullins runner – in the Mares’ Hurdle (4:10pm) on day one too. While the Tuesday action ends with the stamina-sapping NH Challenge Cup for the amateur jockeys in a race that Corbetts Cross and Embassy Gardens hold big chances for top riders Patrick Mullins, who has three wins since 2018 and Derek O’Connor (2016).
