Liverpool vs Southampton Preview

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are coming off the back of an extra-time victory in the League Cup final at Wembley. The Reds defeated Chelsea thanks to a 118th-minute header from Virgil van Dijk.

Their tenth triumph in the competition came despite missing big names such as Salah, Nunez and Jota, among a host of injured stars.

In the Premier League, they continue to lead an epic three way title race. Liverpool are just a point ahead of Manchester City, and two above Arsenal in third.

Southampton meanwhile have hit a dip in form after Russell Martin’s side went a club record 25 matches unbeaten through the middle of the season.

Recent losses to Hull City, Bristol City and Millwall on Saturday have seen them slip out of the automatic promotion places. But with 12 games left to play in the Championship, there is plenty of football still to go.

In a season where the top four have been head and shoulders above the rest, it will be cruel for whichever of Southampton, Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich fail to go up come the end of the campaign.

So while Liverpool are heavy favourites, their injuries and Southampton’s strong season mean an upset isn’t impossible.

Liverpool Team News

At this stage, it’s almost definitely quicker to list the Liverpool players who aren’t injured. Jurgen Klopp’s already depleted squad took another double blow at the weekend as Ryan Gravenberch left Wembley on a stretcher and Waturo Endo needed crutches at full time.

Although pleased with their League Cup triumph, Liverpool will be reeling at the loss of two more key men. The trio of Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez all failed late fitness tests ahead of the final on Sunday.

Klopp will be desperate to use those three in midweek, but none are guaranteed to play at this stage.

Stefan Bajcetic (calf), Ben Doak (knee), Thiago Alcantara (muscle), Joel Matip (knee), Trent Alexander Arnonld (knee), Diogo Jota (knee), Alisson Becker (hamstring) and Curtis Jones (shin) are all confirmed to be out for Wednesday night.

Worse is the news that only Jones is expected back before next month’s international break.

Liverpool possible starting lineup:

Kelleher; Bradley, Gomez, Quansah, Tsimikas; Clark, Mac Allister, McConnell; Elliott, Danns, Gakpo

Southampton Team News

Southampton meanwhil have issues of their own, with on-loan Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser needing crutches after picking up a knee injury in his side’s 2-1 loss to Millwall at the weekend.

Fraser is joined in the treatment room by Ross Stewart (muscle) and Juan Larios (unspecified), while David Brooks is cup-tied after playing for Bournemouth before joining the Saints on loan.

Samuel Edozie and Kamaldeen Sulemana are therefore in line to return to the starting lineup, as is Adam Armstrong. Unlike Brooks, fellow Bournemouth loanee Joe Rothwell is eligible to play, so may mover into midfield with Flynn Downes still a doubt.

Southampton possible starting lineup:

Lumley; Manning, Bednarek, Harwood-Bellis, Walker-Peters; Rothwell, S. Armstrong, Aribo; Edozie, A. Armstrong, Adams
