Note: Most lays selected will be priced reasonably at 4/1 or shorter. However, if any should drift before the race to a much bigger price and liability, they are probably best avoided.

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Wednesday: 8:30pm Kempton – PERTHSHIRE

It’s off to the last race of the day this Wednesday at Kempton, with the Mark Usher-trained PERTHSHIRE of interest.

This 6 year-old is still hunting his first career win, from 12 runs, which is the first negative.

The horse is 2lbs from his lat run and jockey George Bass helps further by claiming 3lbs but there are several reasons to suggest this son of Gleneagles is not the most straight-forward.

Firstly, he’s had a wind op since his last run, plus connections have been chopping and changing his trip over his career – running from anything to 7f, right up to 2m 1/2f.

His most recent run was over 1m6f but is back to 1m3f here – a trip he’s run over once before and finished 6th of 12.

His form also tells us he had big issues during 2022 and 2023 – being off for 797 days and his three return runs have been okay, but nothing special.

Add in that connections are also reaching for the first-time cheekpieces, which is another sign he’s not an easy horse to train. All-in-all, with the headgear, changing of trip and wind op it seems connections are throwing everything at him here.

His best runs have also been at Wolves, with his sole Kempton start resulting in a 5th of 14. The final negative is the form of the Mark Usher camp at the Sunbury-on-Thames track.

They’ve had just 10 winners from their last 180 runners (6%), which gives us one last negative to cling to.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.

If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
