Gabby Agbonlahor fully believes that his former side are firmly in the title race by claiming Aston Villa have the third best squad in the league.

What did Agbonlahor say?

talkSport host Agbonlahor is known for having controversial opinions sometimes. Agbonlahor decided not to include Newcastle’s and Manchester United’s squad.

Agbonlahor began by naming his B teams for the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham. He said: “The top three out of these are Man City, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

“I think Villa’s bench is better than Arsenal’s when everyone is fit.”

These were his results:

Manchester City

Gabby Agbonlahor’s second XI: Stefan Ortega; Rico Lewis, Manuel Akanji Josko Gvardiol, Sergio Gomez, Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku, Oscar Bobb, Micah Hamilton, Julian Alvarez.

Manchester City were able to win the treble last season due to their incredible squad depth.

Arsenal

Gabby Agbonlahor’s second XIAaron Ramsdale; Takehiro Tomiyasu, Julien Timber, Jacub Kiwior, Cedric Soares; Thomas Partey, Jorginho, Fabio Vieira, Emile Smith Rowe, Leandro Trossard, Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal’s second XI is strong but there’s too many players injured in that list which has somewhat contributed to their poor run of form.

Liverpool

Gabby Agbonlahor’s second XICaoimhin Kelleher, Connor Bradley, Kostas Tsimikas, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, Harvey Elliott, Kaide Gordan, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo.

Most of these players are appearing in the current Liverpool first team due to other players having international commitments or injuries.

Aston Villa

Gabby Agbonlahor’s second XIRobin Olsen, Calum Chambers, Diego Carlos, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne, Leander Dendoncker, Jacob Ramsey, Youri Tielemans, Nicolo Zaniolo, Emi Buendia, Jhon Duran.

This XI has helped Aston Villa through the Europa Conference League so far.

Tottenham

Gabby Agbonlahor’s second XI: Fraser Forster, Emerson Royal, Radu Dragusin, Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon, Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Bryan Gil, Timo Werner, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson

Tottenham’s injury list has given some of these squad players a chance in the first team.

Chelsea

Gabby Agbonlahor’s second XI: Djordje Petrovic, Malo Gusto, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Marc Cucurella, Romeo Lavia, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lesley Ugochukwu, Mykahailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea have spent £1bn since 2022, so you’d except them to be on here despite their poor start to the season.

Title race

Liverpool are league leaders but Manchester City are now hot on their tail. With the return of Kevin De Bruyne, City are capable of going on a 15-game winning run.

Aston Villa and Tottenham won’t have the experience to be proper contenders. Arsenal just need a deadly striker to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City.

Chelsea will be hoping for a Europa League spot.
