Andy Newton continues with his Lay Of The Day tips on Thursday 18th January 2024, where he’s got one horse to take on at Chelmsford.
Lay Of The Day Tip: Thursday 18th January 2024
The UK horse racing cards on Thursday come from Chelmsford and Southwell on the AW, with Ludlow and Wincanton off due to frozen tracks.
See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.
There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).
Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM, where you can get a ÂŁ40 free bet below – you choose!

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Tip: 1:55pm Chelmsford – COME ON GIRL
The cold spell has claimed Thursday’s jumping cards at Ludlow and Wincanton – leaving us with just two AW fixtures from Chelmsford and Southwell.
It’s the first of those tracks that we are heading to today – Chelmsford – as the Mick Appleby runner COME ON GIRL looks to have a few questions to answer.
Okay, this is not a great race and with her consistent profile it’s easy to see why the best UK horse racing betting sites have her popular in the betting. However, despite a string of placed runs of late she’s not actually won a race since August 2022.
This run stretches back 16 races, which is hardly inspiring stuff if you want to wade in at fairly short odds. Yes, the handicapper is slowing giving her a chance as she’s been dropped another pound from last time. But was still beaten almost two lengths in a similar race.
The other negatives are the poor form of the Appleby yard at the moment – just 3 winners from their last 44 – at the time of writing. While, for me, the horse also has questions to answer surrounding the track.
All five of her career wins (from 59 runs) have been either at Lingfield (4) or Kempton (1). Then looking at her form at Chelmsford – she’s raced at the Essex track seven times and is yet to record a win 4-4-2-4-3-7-5.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.
If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
