Haydock Park and course specialist Royal Pagaille will both be on ‘weather watch’ with a cold spell sweeping the country – as the Lancashire track will be hoping to avoid another frozen track that led to Saturday’s Peter Marsh Chase being called off last season.
There is a glimmer of hope though, as things are meant to get slightly warmer as the weekend approaches, but with the Haydock going already described as ‘frozen’ – will there be enough time for it to thaw out?
Royale Pagaille Looking For Third Straight Win In Peter Marsh Chase
Should Haydock get the green light to race on Saturday, the Peter Marsh Handicap Chase will headline the action – a race the Venetia Williams-trained Royale Pagaille has won in 2021 and 2022.
The horse was denied his three-timer in the race with this Haydock card called off 12 months ago due to a frozen track, and with low temperatures again this week it might be more of the same for one of their biggest jumping race days on the calendar.
However, should things warm up then all eyes will be on Royale Pagaille, who has been entered again for the race he’s won twice before.
Being the top-rated in the field again (166), he’ll have to shoulder a big 12st in weight but is no stranger to lumping big burdens around Haydock.
He won this in 2021 and 2022 with 11st-10lbs and is only rated 3lbs higher than his 2022 success.
Regular rider Charlie Deutsch has been booked to ride again and he’s recently taken to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to say a third win in the Peter Marsh would be right up there with his Grade One Betfair Chase win.
The best UK horse racing betting sites make Royale Pagaille the betting favourite with last year’s Ultima Chase third Monbeg Genius and Famous Bridge next best.
Jockey Charlie Deutsch admits a record-breaking third victory for Royale Pagaille in the Sky Bet Peter Marsh Handicap Chase at Haydock Park on Saturday would be up there with his breakthrough Grade One victory at the track in this season’s Betfair Chase 🏆🏆🏆

Royale Pagaille and Haydock – A Match Made In Heaven
The term ‘horses for courses’ is often widely used but this phrase certainly comes into its own when Royale Pagaille and Haydock are concerned.
This Rich Ricci-owned horse has run at Haydock five times and only tasted defeat once, with four wins.
His Haydock form reads 1-1-2-1-1, with his most recent success at the Lancashire venue a top Grade One win in the Betfair Chase. When beating last season’s King George VI Chase winner Bravemansgame.

Royale Pagaille Last Seen Winning The Betfair Chase at Haydock
The 10 year-old continued his love affair with Haydock Park last time out when trouncing the 2022 King George VI Chase winner Bravemansgame (watch below).
This success gave Royale Pagaille his fifth win at the track and from six runs at the course is yet to finish out of the first two.
Royale Pagaille and Jodami The Winning-Most Peter Marsh Chase Horses
If Haydock does race on Saturday and should Royale Pagaille win again, he’d overtake Jodami as the winning-most Peter Marsh Chase winner.
Currently, Royale Pagaille and Jodami are both locked on two wins each, with Peter Beaumont-trained Jodami’s wins coming spaced out in 1993 and 1997 – his last at the age of 12.
