Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 12:40 Warwick – DONNACHA

This Nigel Hawke runner – DONNACHA – will be a popular pick here after a string of fair efforts at Cheltenham. Plus, has an overall consistent profile that has seen him finish in the top three in four of his five hurdles starts.

However, despite this, he’s still only managed one win and that came by just a neck at Chepstow back in October this season and also on good-to-soft ground.

The ground on at Warwick on Saturday will be slightly softer and to date both times he’s raced in conditions described as ‘soft’ has been beaten (3rd & 4th).

Yes, he’s eased in grade here and that will, of course, help, but as a result has to shoulder 11st 11lbs in weight and this will be the biggest burden he’s had to carry by some way. The previous high was 11-3, when runner-up to Impose Toi at Cheltenham two runs back.

The Nigel Hawke Yard Are Just 1-from-20 With Their Hurdlers At Warwick

Two other minor negatives are that jockey Lorcan Murtagh will be riding for the first time. Plus, this will also be the horse’s debut run at Warwick.

Finally, the Nigel Hawke yard boast just a 7% record at the track (2-from-30) with their runners and just 1-from-20 with their hurdlers. These are less than inspiring course stats.

So, overall there seems enough to take the horse on with. We’ll also have eight others in the race on our side, including the promising JP McManus-owned Klitschko, plus recent Fontwell scorer Word Has It.

We’ve more horse racing free tips here – including our daily NAP of the Day and Lucky 15 selections.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.

If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
