Chelsea have built up quite a reputation over the years for casting away superstars. Could Timo Werner be the next?
Mohamed Salah
Under Jose Mourinho, Salah never worked out. Chelsea signed him in January 2014 to the disappointment of Liverpool who were also after him at that point.
He was 21-years-old and only scored twice for Chelsea before getting loaned out to Fiorentina. He scored nine goals in 26 appearances which wasn’t enough to impress Chelsea and they sold him to Roma the season after
Roma kickstarted Salah’s career – scoring 35 goals in two seasons. Salah finally joined Liverpool in 2017 and…well…you know the rest. He has become Liverpool’s fifth highest goalscorer in history with 204 goals and counting.
He’s also won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup, Club World Cup, Community Shield and Carabao Cup with Liverpool.
Kevin De Bruyne
Chelsea signed De Bruyne in 2012, from Genk, when he was just 20-years-old. Chelsea loaned him out to Werder Bremen and had an incredible season there – scoring 10 goals and assisting 20 in just 34 appearances. Wolfsburg then signed him in January 2014.
He made 73 appearances for Wolfsburg and scored 20 goals and assisted 37.
De Bruyne then joined Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City. Pep Guardiola took over from Pellegrini a season later and that’s when De Bruyne started to showcase his talent.
De Bruyne has become one of the best midfielders to have ever played in the Premier League. He has 154 assists, 96 goals and multiple trophies. Five Premier Leagues, five Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, two Community Shields. Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.
Romelu Lukaku
Okay, Lukaku has become a joke over the internet for some recent lazy finishing but he’s still one who became a better player when he left Chelsea.
His first signs of promise was when he joined West Brom on loan. He scored 17 that season but it didn’t impress Chelsea.
He then joined Everton and scored 87 goals there in 166 appearances. Everton couldn’t hold on to Lukaku once Manchester United came knocking but his move to Old Trafford saw a downfall in his career.
He wasn’t reaching the numbers he was during his time at Everton and was eventually sold to Inter Milan where he found form again.
Lukaku scored over 50 goals in two seasons which peaked Chelsea’s interest. He became the club record transfer at £97.5m. He ultimately flopped only scoring 12 goals all season. He moved back to Inter Milan on loan before being sold to Mourinho’s Roma.
He has scored 14 goals so far for Roma. The Belgian is finding his feet once again.
Tottenham’s Timo
Werner has joined Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig. He joined Chelsea in 2020 for £45m. In the two seasons he spent at Chelsea, he only scored 20 goals. RB Leipzig re-signed him but he’s struggled to find his form at Leipzig that he initially made him one of the best in Europe.
He hopes his return to the Premier League can spark his career once more. His journey begins at Old Trafford as Tottenham take on Manchester United which viewers can watch on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday 14th January at 4:30pm.
