Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 2:45 Ludlow – INNISFREE LAD
The 2:45pm at Ludlow on Friday is a trappy five-runner Handicap Chase that you can make claims for them all – including recent Doncaster scorer Innisfree Lad.
However, despite this David Dennis runner defying his age to win by 2 1/4 lengths on Town Moor last month there are several reasons to suggest he won’t follow up.
First up is his age. Okay, he turned back the clock last time, on what was also his first run back from a wind operation, but as we all know horses start to decline as soon as they hit 11 or 12 years-old.
Secondly the handicapper has hiked him up a big-looking 8lbs for that last success and the last time he raced off this mark of 120 he was well-beaten at Newton Abbot.
Next up is the much softer ground he’s likely to face at Ludlow from last time. He won on good-to-soft ground the last day but his recent runs in conditions described as ‘soft’ or ‘heavy’ read 7-PU-3-PU-2-8-3-3-2-6.
Finally, in his 49-race career Innisfree Lad has only ever recorded ‘back-to-back’ wins once and that came in his younger days back in 2020 as an 8 year-old. While of the other runners, we’ll also have last year’s winner running for us, Tide Times, plus Haut Folin – who hails from the in-form Venetia Williams yard that also won this race in 2022.
Therefore, all things considered, there looks to be enough reasons to take on the old-timer Innisfree Lad on Friday.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1), then you could lay this horse for £10.
If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
