Aston Villa vs Burnley Report: Five-Goal Thriller at Villa Park

Unai Emery’s side have hit a rocky patch of form over the Christmas period. Three straight wins and a six-game unbeaten run came to respective halts, with a draw with Sheffield United before a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

A somewhat cagey first 25 minutes were soon forgotten when Leon Bailey hammered home after 28 minutes, and barely 100 seconds later, the visitors drew level through a Zeki Amdouni volley.

Lyle Foster thought he had put Burnley in front but was denied by the offside flag. Soon afterwards, Villa found a second goal of their own when Ollie Watkins teed up Moussa Diaby for a cool finish.

Burnley’s task got tougher when, 11 minutes into the second half, Sander Berge was shown a second yellow card. They certainly rallied though, with Foster splitting the defence to race into the box and slot home a fantastic equaliser against the run of play.

Villa pressed hard for a third goal throughout the half, testing the 10 men of Burnley. James Trafford was called upon to make a number of saves, denying Watkins, Diaby, and John McGinn.

However, former Villa man Aaron Ramsey was penalised for a foul on Jhon Duran. Douglas Luiz took the penalty and, despite hitting the bar twice, scored, which was enough to secure a 3-2 win.

Villa’s two-game winless run is halted, and they climb up to second in the Premier League before Arsenal’s trip to Fulham. They are level on points with leaders Liverpool, who play Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

As for Burnley, they remain second from bottom, five points from safety, and in desperate need of a positive start to 2024. They play Tottenham in the FA Cup next, while Villa go to Middlesbrough.
