Tottenham Hotspur have set a new Premier League record after their 2-1 defeat to London rivals West Ham United on match week 15 of the 2023/24 season.

The north Londoners have now lost three consecutive home games after taking a 1-0 lead, with second-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse condemning Ange Postecoglou’s side to the unwanted top-flight feat.

After a brilliant start to the new campaign, Spurs have also succumbed on home soil to Chelsea and Aston Villa in recent weeks which has put Postecoglou’s side in the record books for all the wrong reasons.

Here at SportsLens, we take a closer look back at the trio of defeats in question and try to establish why it has gone wrong for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

Cristian Romero’s early strike on his first game back after serving a three-match suspension put Tottenham on their way against fierce rivals West Ham. It was the perfect start but unfortunately, it’s as good as it got for Spurs.

A second-half comeback from the Hammers with goals from Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse saw the east Londoners take all three points, despite only having 25% possession and facing 23 attempts on goal.

Looking at those stats, it was a real smash-and-grab victory for David Moyes’s side and they will be thrilled to walk away from the home of their rivals with the points in the bag.

Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

Giovani Lo Celso scored the opener on match week 13 at home to Aston Villa but again, it was as good as it got for Tottenham. Heung-Min Son even had a hat-trick of offside goals but it’s the strikes at the other end that counted.

Pau Torres’ header in first-half stoppage time brought Villa level and Ollie Watkins secured the points when fired home to complete the turnaround.

Again, Spurs had more possession and more attempts on goal but they couldn’t make it count against Unai Emery’s side.

Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea

Tottenham’s first defeat on home soil after taking the lead came against Chelsea on match week 11. Spurs dominated from the off and were rewarded for their efforts when Dejan Kulusevski scored after just six minutes, then disaster struck.

Cole Palmer equalised from the spot and Ange Postecoglou’s side entertained a trio of injuries and had two players sent off with the Blues, naturally, taking full advantage.

A late Nicolas Jackson treble fired Mauricio Pochettino’s side to victory in what was a resounding victory.

What’s gone wrong at Tottenham?

Tottenham have endured a large number of injuries in recent weeks which has of course, weakened their strongest starting XI. With that said, many Premier League sides have had a plethora of injuries but Spurs have really struggled with their losses.

Ange Postecoglou has adopted an attacking style of play which many Spurs fans will welcome, but it can often backfire as the recent home results reflect.

Perhaps the Lilywhites poor form is just a coincidence, maybe it’s just bad luck or other teams are sussing them out. Nonetheless, Postecoglou needs to find a remedy to get their season back on track.

Spurs are back in action on Sunday – at home – to Newcastle and the best UK betting sites make them the match favourites at 5/4, the draw is 29/10 and the Magpies can be backed at 21/10.
