Cristian Romero has been described as a ‘rock’ in the heart of Tottenham Hotspur’s defence by manager Ange Postecoglou, but does the Argentine’s ill-discipline let him down? Romero has been a key member for Spurs this season but his straight red card against Chelsea on match week 11 provided a stark reminder of his inability to keep a cool head.

Before getting his marching orders against the Blues in November, the Lilywhites enjoyed a 10-game unbeaten start to the 2023/23 Premier League season. Since then, Postecoglou’s side haven’t won so with that in mind it’s easy to suggest Romero should always be one of the first names on the team sheet, but can he always be relied upon?

Cristian Romero Tottenham Stats

Cristian Romero’s Tottenham stats make for mixed reading since he joined the club in 2021. Of the 75 appearances he has made across all competitions in north London, he has won 42 games, drawn nine and lost the remaining 24. Of the 38 games Romero has missed via injury or suspension, Spurs have won 18 times, drawn six and lost 14.

With suspensions and ill-discipline in mind, no Spurs player has been sent-off more times than Romero since he made his debut in 2021. The Argentine World Cup winner has taken an early bath four times with his most recent coming in the London derby against Chelsea. He has also seen red against Man City, Milan and Vitesse.

Ange Postecoglou On Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero is available again after his three match suspension as Tottenham prepare to take on West Ham on match week 15, with the best UK betting sites making Spurs the match favourites at 4/5, the draw 17/5 and the Hammers 17/10.

Boss Ange Postecoglou was quizzed on Romero’s ill-discipline but doesn’t believe it’s a serious issue that needs addressing: “I’ve not had to have a word with (him) about discipline. It’s part of who he is as a player, he brings a physicality to it.

“When he oversteps mark the whole group pays a price so it’s up to him to maintain discipline I know he can show, but more importantly he’s such a strong presence on the field and in during the week, so good to have him back,” the Australian added.

There’s no denying that Romero is a fine defender, but if he continues to have the rushes of blood to the head he has demonstrated in recent years, Postecoglou will need to have a strong word, mate.
