Daniel Levy has proved to be one of the shrewdest and impactful owners in the sport, as he continues his tenure with Tottenham Hotspur. But, what is his net worth and financial story with Spurs?
Daniel Levy Net Worth
Daniel Levy has a reported net worth of £500m (Daily Times), however, he is not the sole owner of Tottenham Hotspur – working in tandem with Joe Lewis.
The 61-year-old takes responsibility for the day-to-day running of the club as managing director of ENIC, but owns 29.4% of the investment company, compared to Lewis’ 70.6%.
The combined net worth of the two is around £3.9bn, which ranks them ninth in the Premier League owner rich list – according to The Sun.
How Did Daniel Levy Acquire His Wealth?
The Tottenham Hotspur Chairman, found wealth through investment banking, starting out in private equity to fund ENIC International Limited, which he owns with long-time business partner, Joe Lewis.
Levy was a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur prior to his eventual ownership and turned ENIC into a sports, entertainment and media company, acquiring stakes in various clubs including Tottenham, Rangers, AEK Athens, Slavia Prague and FC Basel
However, UEFA regulations meant that Levy would have to sell these shares after he took majority control of Spurs and he began his main objective – transition Spurs into a world class side.
Daniel Levy Time With Tottenham Hotspur
Levy began his approach to purchase Tottenham Hotspur in 1998, however, Lord Alan Sugar rejected the offer and did the same to Levy’s second offer in 2000.
Sugar was forced to give in a year later, as Spurs supporters grew tired of the actions at the club and Levy was then appointed to the board of Tottenham Hotspur on 20 December 2000.
ENIC purchased a 27% stake in the club from Sugar for £22 million, which moved their control to 29.9%, this was the limit before ENIC had to attempt to buy for the entire company.
Levy then replaced Sugar as Tottenham Hotspur chairman in February 2001 and took over the the necessary jobs completely in October 2001.
ENIC then went on to increase their control over the club through shareholders and removed Lord Sugar all together, eventually acquiring 85.55% of Tottenham.
ENIC transitioned Spurs into being privately owned over a decade later in 2012 and Levy became the highest-paid Premier League chief executive, with an annual remuneration of over £6 million in the 2016–17 campaign.
You’d think after ENIC took over the club in 2001, that Levy/Lewis would see a host of success, however, they have seen Spurs win just one major domestic trophy in England – winning the League Cup in 2001.
One of Levy’s biggest moments in north-London has been taking Tottenham from White Hart Lane to a state-of-the-art £1.2bn arena.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is yet to be re-branded with a sponsor but is deemed the best stadium in world football.
Levy has also overseen the club’s return to Europe’s most decorated competition, with Spurs spending five of the last seven seasons in the Champions League.
On top of Tottenham’s European prize purses, Levy’s net worth has benefited from an expanded fan base and a fresh NFL partnership and the Cambridge graduate now boasts a total capital of £500m.
Spurs have made huge profit on players, selling the likes of Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric for monstrous transfer fees.
