Tonight’s Carabao Cup fourth round fixtures will be played without VAR, but why is the technology missing and when will it be introduced?

Why Is There No VAR In The Carabao Cup?

Carabao Cup rules dictate that VAR will only be used from the semi-final stage onwards.

The EFL want to ensure that every team involved is on an equal playing field, and due to involvement from Football League sides who play at hone it is deemed unfair to use the technology.

Not all EFL stadiums accomodate the technology, so it remains out of use until the later stages of the competition.

When Will VAR Be Introduced In The Carabao Cup?

We’ll see the technology in action from the two-legged semi-finals to the final at Wembley, set to take place in February 2024.

If an EFL side who don’t have VAR set-up in their stadium make it to the final four, it will be installed there on a temporary basis.

VAR History In The Carabao Cup

VAR was introduced in the Carabao Cup in the 2018/19 season as part of extensive testing for its eventual use in the Premier League the following season.

Due to the technology only being available at top-flight stadiums, the EFL opted to ditch the system before the semi-final stage in the 2019/20 season.

Many football supporters have already grown sick of VAR and officials’ inability to use the technology correctly, which has led to a number of botched decisions and apologies from PGMOL.
