See below our Doncaster tips and trends for the Futurity Trophy Stakes as trainer Aidan O’Brien, who is already the winning most handler in the history of the race, looks to win the Doncaster Group One for a remarkable twelfth time.

Doncaster Tips and Trends For Futurity Trophy: Is It A Two-Horse Race?
This Saturday’s Group One Futurity Trophy is named in honour of Kameko this year – the 2019 winner of the Doncaster rewnewal.
It’s a race with a ÂŁ127k top prize and it’s one that this year has a bit of a two-horse head-to-head feel to it, with Godolphin’s Ancient Wisdom and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Diego Velazquez the big two in the betting.
However, the Roger Teal camp might have something to say about that with their improving Dancing Gemini, who won the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at the track last time out, in the race too, plus the once-raced God’s Window for the Gosden yard.
You can see our Doncaster tips for the big race below.
Aidan O’Brien Has 11 Futurity Trophy Stakes Wins To His Name
With a monster eleven wins in the Futurity Trophy Stakes, the Aidan O’Brien yard lead the way with the most wins in this race.
Their first success came back in 1997 with Saratoga Springs and over the years big names like Camelot, High Chaparral and Saxon Warrior have donned the winners’ enclosure.
While last year O’Brien was at it again, when his Auguste Rodin took the prize and followed up the following season in the Epsom Derby – it was this third horse to win both races.
This year, O’Brien’s big hope will be Diego Velazquez, who was last seen winning the KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown.
Aidan O’Brien Futurity Trophy Stakes Winners
Saratoga Springs (1997), Aristotle (1999), High Chaparral (2001), Brian Boru (2002), St Nicholas Abbey (2009), Camelot (2011), Kingsbarns (2012), Saxon Warrior (2017), Magna Grecia (2018), Luxembourg (2021), Auguste Rodin (2022).
Trainer Charlie Appleby Has NEVER Won The Futurity Trophy Stakes
In contrast to the top record Aidan O’Brien has, the powerful Charlie Appleby team are yet to grace the Futurity Trophy Stakes winners’ enclosure.
They will, however, be hoping to break that duck with Ancient Wisdom, who was a tidy winner of the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket last time out.
Godolphin have won the race twice before though – Medaaly (1996) and Ibn Khaldun (2007) – both were trained by Saeed Bin Suroor.
Six Futurity Trophy Stakes Winners Went Onto Win The Epsom Derby
Despite being run over a mile, Saturday’s Futurity Trophy Stakes has been a good guide to the following year’s Epsom Derby, with these 2 year-olds often having enough stamina in their pedigrees to cope with the longer trips as 3 year-old olds.
Over the years Reference Point (1986), High Chaparral (2001), Motivator (2004), Authorized (2006), Camelot (2011) and most recently Auguste Rodin (2022) are the horses that have done the Futurity Trophy Stakes/Epsom Derby double.
Favourites Have A Good Record In The Doncaster Group One
With a massive 86% of the last 21 favourites placed in the race, then the market leaders are often never far away.
In term of actually winning, this decreases to 67% – but is still a very nice return that tells us this is a race that punters tend to get right more often than not.
This year’s favourite looks set to be either Ancient Wisdom or Diego Velazquez – both are tight at the head of the betting, so we’ll have to wait till 2:45pm on Saturday to see which one goes off as the jolly.
Doncaster Tips for 2023 Futurity Trophy Stakes
It’s hard to ignore the top record of the Aidan O’Brien yard and in Diego Velazquez, who is a well-bred Frankel colt, they’ve got a huge chance of winning this prize for a 12th time.
However, with both wins to date coming on good ground, he’s going to encounter a much softer surface here and is also officially rated 5lbs lower than Godolphin’s Ancient Wisdom.
This Charlie Appleby runner has won 3 of his 4 starts and impressed last time out when taking the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket over 1m on his first run on soft ground.
With that experience with give underfoot and more runs (4), he’s taken to give the Appleby team their first success in the race and rates one of the best Doncaster tips on the card this Saturday.
