BANKER: 6:00 Kempton: SUMMER OF LOVE 4/6
CD winner at Kempton last week for the Saeed Bin Suroor camp and, despite a 7lb penalty for that, this Dark Angel filly won by a cosy 4 1/4 lengths that day to suggest she’s up to defying the hike in the ratings. Christian Howarth rode that day too and remains in the saddle and even though he can’t claim 5lbs this time, can still take a handy 3lbs off her back. Oh, and the final icing on the cake is the yard have won this race four times since 2018, but it’s worth noting they do also run the unraced Desert Horizon.
LAY OF THE DAY: 4:58 Kempton: DIGITAL Evens
On past form this Karl Burke runner would win this Claiming Stakes on these terms with ease. However, a string of 6’s next to his name is not an encouraging sign, albeit in much better races. He’s also yet to win a race over today’s 6f trip, with his three career successes all coming over 5f, while his last win was 18 races ago and back in Feb 2022. Yes, this is a dire affair and connections have also jocked-up the useful Brandon Wilkie to claim a further 7lbs, so he’s still the clear one to beat. But you’d have to be a brave punter to wade into a horse at just Evs that hasn’t won in 18 – no matter what the grade. So, at the prices, there seems little downside in looking elsewhere for the winner.
STAT HORSE: 3:00 Newmarket: TRIBAL STAR 9/4
Trainer Charlie Appleby has won 50% of the last 6 runnings of this Newmarket maiden – including the last two renewals. The Godolphin main man introduces the unraced Tribal Star this year, who is a well-bred Sea The Stars gelding that should be at home over this 1m2f trip, being by a Epsom Derby winner.
The stable are also in flying form with a 50% strike-rate (8-16) with their runners over the last 2 weeks and they also boast a 35% record (38-110) at Newmarket with their juveniles.
Tribal Star also entered for a race at Newbury on Friday, so that’s also a clear sign connections are keen to get going with him. Jockey William Buick has also ridden 3 of the last 6 winners of this race and rides.
