BANKER: 1:05 Newton Abbot: ICEO 4/5
The Paul Nicholls camp have a cracking 36% strike-rate with their chasers at Newton Abbot and their former Imperial Cup winner Iceo looks banker material in their opener today. This useful hurdler has been switched to fences this season and showed that to be a good move with a facile 12-length success over this course and distance earlier this month. Soft ground is fine too and despite this being a harder race, is match fit and taking on two rivals that have not been out for 6+ months.
EACH-WAY: 1:50 Ascot: VADREAM 13/2
Trainer Charlie Fellowes has made no secret that he thinks his 5 year-old mare – Vadream – is as good as there is when the ground is soft/heavy and that’s exactly what she’ll get today as the yard searches for their first Group One prize. Her last runs on ground described ‘soft’ or ‘heavy’ read 3-1-1 and we know the track also suits, being a proven CD Ascot winner. Kinross, who won this race last year, is the clear one to beat with Frankie Dettori riding, but Vadream looks the value each-way call in conditions we know she’ll love.
LAY OF THE DAY: 1:15 Ascot: KYPRIOS 5/4
High class staying ‘cup horse’ on his day and will of the 2022 Ascot Gold Cup here. However, Kyprios had been off for much of this season with an injury and the jury is out on if he’s returned the same horse after a poor return run at the Curragh last month. Was a beaten favourite that day in the Group One Irish St Leger and even though he can be expected to have come on for that, it was still an effort we are not used to seeing from him. He’ll also be taking on the three-time winner of this race in Trueshan, so things won’t get easier and, therefore, we feel he’s got a bit to prove today and doesn’t look the best value.
