AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has opened up about his sense of newfound freedom after leaving Chelsea in the summer, where he felt confined.

Loftus-Cheek spent nearly two decades at Chelsea, progressing from the academy to the first team. His promising 2018/19 season was ruined by an Achilles injury, which hindered his progress at Chelsea.

After returning from this injury, Loftus-Cheek faced a frustrating few seasons at Chelsea and was unable to establish himself as a key player.

He had loan spells with Crystal Palace and Fulham throughout his time at Chelsea before making the permanent switch to Milan in June.

So far, this decision has proven to be fruitful. The England international has featured in six of Milan’s eight Serie A matches this season and is relishing his football in Italy.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Loftus-Cheek revealed, “At Chelsea, I felt like a caged animal. I didn’t play as much as I wanted, and when I did, it was often in positions that limited my creativity.”

However, life in Milan has breathed new life into him. He feels liberated, playing in his preferred midfield role, allowing him to rediscover the joy of the game, reminiscent of carefree childhood days.

He added, “Here, however, I have a free mind; I play as a midfielder as I like, and it’s like being a child again when we played without worries. If the whole team has this feeling, great things can be achieved, even winning the championship. We feel like the best.”

Since joining Milan, Loftus-Cheek has already made an impact, contributing one goal and two assists. The 27-year-old has quickly settled into life in Milan and is thriving in his new surroundings.
