Liverpool and Everton meet for the 243rd on Saturday afternoon. The Merseyside derby has been dominated by Liverpool as they’ve won 98 times compared to Everton’s 67. But when was the last time Everton beat Liverpool?

It’s not as far back as you think but it’s one you may have forgotten about considering it was during COVID times. On the 20th February 2021, Liverpool welcomed Everton to Merseyside. Everton hadn’t beaten Liverpool since 1999 prior to this match.

Liverpool had lost their last three league games prior to this clash. Everton also came into the game having not won in their last three.

Richarlison opened the scoring after 3 minutes to give the Toffees the lead. Pickford pulled off a couple of good stops in the game. With 10 minutes to go Everton were awarded a controversial penalty following a challenge from Trent Alexander-Arnold on Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the spot to double Everton’s lead.

The full-time whistle came that ended Everton’s long 22-year wait for a win over Liverpool.

Going into Saturday’s Premier League game Liverpool sit in 4th spot whilst Everton are stumbling to try and get results to keep them from the bottom 3, they are in 16th position.
