The Owen Burrows-trained and Shadwell-owned Hukum, who landed the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot this season, has been retired to stud – ending a four year career, which saw him win 11 times.

Hukum Retires To Stud With Over £1.3m Banked For Shadwell

Horse racing fans first saw Hukum running third in a Newbury Novice Stakes back on 21st September 2019 over 7f and few would have thought, based on that evidence, the Owen Burrows-trained horse would go onto win 11 races and scoop over £1.3m in total prize money.

Well, he did and one of those 11 wins came earlier this season in the 2023 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (watch below) at Ascot – a win that would have super-charged his stud fee once retired.

That retirement date has now been announced and he’s expected to stand for stallion duties for Darley in Japan – starting next year.

Hukum was last seen running down the field in the Arc at Longchamp, but before that had won his last three races that included the King George, Brigadier Gerard Stake and the 2022 Coronation Cup at Epsom.

Jockey Jim Crowley rode Hukum in ALL 18 of his career runs and only finished outside the top 5 on the horse twice.

Hukum’s Trainer Owen Burrows Told The Racing Post

“He’s been an immense horse for me for four seasons. It’s not often you get one to train that long on the Flat. I’ll be forever in his debt. As a three-year-old, he was my first Royal Ascot winner.

“He then won in Dubai and gave me my first Group 1 in the Coronation Cup. The King George this year capped it all. It was a hell of a spectacle with two very brave horses giving their all. He’s brought my career to a completely different level.”

Burrows nominated the King George as his highlight with Hukum, but also paid tribute to his ability to bounce back to his best from his lengthy absence.

“The King George field was filled with Group 1 winners and the final couple of furlongs was as fine a race as you’ll see,” he added. “It was a huge team effort to get him back too. It’s a credit to the horse.

“As a six-year-old, he could have quite easily said he didn’t fancy it anymore. Not just physically, but mentally he wanted it as well. Hopefully that will serve him well taking up his stallion duties.”
