New Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney is reportedly keen on making former England teammate Jack Butland his first signing for the club.

Wayne Rooney Wants Jack Butland As First Brum Signing

Rooney was announced as the new Blues boss last week, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal at St Andrew’s.

The Manchester United and England legend was most recently DC United’s coach in the MLS and has returned to his homeland to try and guide Birmingham City get back to the Premier League.

Despite Birmingham sitting pretty in sixth in the Championship, John Eustace was sacked after multiple disagreements between himself and club hierarchy.

And Rooney may already have lined up his first signing for his new side and is eyeing up a move for former England teammate Butland this January.

The 30-year-old shot stopper is currently playing for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership after joining them on a free transfer following his release from Crystal Palace in the summer.

Butland came through the academy at Birmingham and made his senior debut in 2010 before signing for Stoke City in 2013. Returning to his old stomping ground could be an exciting prospect for him considering the club’s position in the league.

The West Midlands side are hoping to move out second-string goalkeeper Neil Etheridge who is on a large salary. Butland would likely be drafted in to challenge John Ruddy for the number one spot.

Former Manchester United loanee Butland has kept seven clean sheets across 16 games in all competitions so far this season for Rangers. He has featured in the Scottish Premiership, Scottish League Cup, Champions League qualifiers and Europa League group stage.

Birmingham are also keen on strengthening elsewhere in the squad and want to bring in a defender and striker in the January transfer window too.
