Frankie Dettori rides at Newmarket today – which will be his first day in action since announcing he’s no longer retiring from the saddle. The pocket Italian has three booked mounts at HQ, so can he grab his first winner back as a now ‘unretiring’ jockey?
The ‘Unretired’ Frankie Dettori Has Three Rides At Newmarket Today
Frankie Dettori shocked the racing world on Thursday by announcing that his planned retirement and ‘farewell tour’ this season has been cancelled – with the Italian jockey now set to race on into 2024 and maybe beyond by relocating to the US full-time.
Anyway, before all that – Frankie is back in action today with three rides at Newmarket, so can he grab a winner the day after shelving his retirement plans?

1.50 Newmarket: SWEETEST 18/1
Frankie has been booked to ride by top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien here, on what looks their second string with Ryan Moore getting the leg-up on Alabama. Sweetest is a Blue Point filly, so speed will be her game. She’s yet to get off the mark from four career runs to date though and been a beaten favourite in ALL her outings so far. Plenty to prove based on that, so will need a bit of ‘Frankie Magic’ to break her maiden.
4.10 Newmarket: AMBIENTE AMIGO 18/1
Another big-priced Frankie runner today as he teams up with trainer Michael Bell. This Postponed 2 year-old filly has done little wrong in her first three races – winning the last two by 7 lengths and 6 1/2 lengths at Lingfield – one on the turf and one on the AW.
She’s up significantly in grade here though (Group 1), with those wins coming in class 5 Maidens and a Novice Stakes so will be taking on much better fillies. Of course, she’ll need a big leap forward but has impressed to date and could have each-way claims at a fair price if the dead eight runners (top 3 places) stand their ground.
5.55 Newmarket: BOOGIE WOOGIE 13/2
Dettori has to wait around till the final Newmarket race today for his last ride and it’s another for trainer Aidan O’Brien. This 3 year-old Dubawi filly was 5th (of 10) in the G2 Park Hill Stakes last time out (watch below), but is eased slightly here into a Group 3. She also clearly didn’t stay the 1m 6 1/2f trip the last day at Doncaster, so it looks a good move by connections to drop her back to 1m2f here. Soft ground is fine too and Frankie has a fair recent record in this race with wins in 2018 and 2019. Probably Dettori’s best chance of a winner on the day.
