Liverpool defender Andy Robertson was forced off the field with a shoulder injury during Scotland’s European Championships qualifier against Spain.
The Scotland captain was seen cradling his arm inside his shirt as he was escorted off the pitch before half-time.
The injury occurred following a heavy collision with Spain’s goalkeeper, Unai Simon, as they both leaped to contest for a 50-50 ball. Although Spain were awarded a free-kick after the incident, the Liverpool defender remained grounded and was unable to continue.
With Robertson sidelined, Everton’s Nathan Patterson stepped in as his replacement. The injury to Robertson spells trouble for Liverpool, as he has played every minute for the Reds in the Premier League so far this season.
Scotland’s hopes of securing qualification for the upcoming finals in Germany hinged on avoiding defeat in Seville or Norway failing to defeat Cyprus on the same night.
However, Norway clinched a resounding 4-0 victory over Cyprus, while Spain went on to beat Scotland 2-0. Manchester United’s Scott McTominay appeared to put his team on the path to qualification when he netted a superb strike from a free-kick, sending the away fans into jubilation. Unfortunately, VAR intervened, ruling the goal out.

Spain managed to find the back of the net through Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet. The latter seized an opportunity after Aaron Hickey slipped just outside the box. This outcome extends Scotland’s ongoing quest for qualification.
Steve Clarke’s squad had previously secured a spot in Euro 2020. That tournament ended with an early elimination in the group stages.
As for Liverpool, they return to Premier League action on October 21, when they face Merseyside rivals Everton.
