Liverpool are in the midst of expanding Anfield’s capacity from 54,ooo to 61,000. This is an £80 million project that was greenlit back in June 2021.
The expanded Anfield road stand was meant to be completed before the start of the current season but Buckingham group went into administration. Buckingham group were the original contractor. Liverpool have since switched to Rayner Rowen Group.
Club chief executive Billy Hogan made a statement this afternoon:
“And what’s become clear in the last few days is there’s just more work to be done in order to get a full project completion plan for the stand, which means unfortunately as I said that the upper tier is not ready to partially or fully open until the end of the calendar year.
“Rayner Rowen really needs the time to complete the information-gathering before we commit to any new project timeline,” said Hogan.
“There’s a lot of different, various factors that are going into this discussion and into this review, so many pieces of the jigsaw that we need to pull together so it’s just not possible at this point to put a new timeline in place.”
Delaying this could result in Liverpool losing £6.75m. According to Anfield Index, football finance expert Kieran Maguire estimated that Liverpool were losing £750,000 in revenue for each home game they host with a reduced capacity.
