Roy Keane Describes Ivan Toney’s Eight-Month Gambling Ban as “Not Ideal” Amid Arsenal Interest

As rumours of Ivan Toney heading for the exit door in January intensify, Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane has suggested his current predicament is less than favourable for potential suitors Arsenal.

By the time Ivan Toney returns to action following his ban for breaching the FA’s gambling rules on 232 occasions, he will have been away from Premier League football for eight months.

After serving the first half of the eight months, he was allowed to return to first team training in mid-September and last week was permitted to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly, where, as we have to come expect, he found the net.

The Brentford striker is still barred from returning to full, competitive action until January 16th, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from churning.

Toney, who turns 28 in March, scored 20 times for the Bees last season – behind only to Harry Kane and Erling Haaland – which has seen his stock increase and interest grow as the winter window approaches.

Wide spread reports linking Toney with a move to Arsenal refuse to die down, and the man himself recently admitted he has been a life-long admirer of the Gunners during an appearance on Steven Barlett’s The Diary of a CEO.

Although it appears title challengers Arsenal could still benefit from a striker who guarantees in the region of 20 goals a season, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has warned the Gunners to tread with caution.

In a new podcast presented by Sky Sports pundits, Stick to Football,  co-host Jamie Carragher said: “I still think if they’re [Arsenal] to win the league they need a striker. I do look at that and you think of the Toney situation and he is a quality centre-forward.”

Roy Keane was quick to make the point that Ivan Toney won’t have featured since the end of last season. He said: “He’d be coming to the club having not played for a number of months, that’s not ideal either.”

Although we are just eight games into the season, everything points towards Arsenal still being firmly in the mix for the title come January. Could Toney be the difference-maker? Or will he disrupt their rhythm mid-way through the season?

Time will tell.
