Aston Villa won 1-0 against HŠK Zrinjski Mostar thanks to a late header from John McGinn. With the Villans now off the mark in Group E, check out the latest Aston Villa Conference League odds.

Story Of The Game

Unai Emery’s side went into their game with Zrinjski in good form, winning three of their last five games. However, despite their strong start to the season, Villa lost their opening Conference League game 3-2 away at Legia Warszawa.

As for the visiting Bosnian side, they too have been in excellent form winning all of their last four games, including winning 4-3 against AZ Alkmaar on Matchday 1.

And much as their form suggested, Zrinjski proved tough to break down and kept the Premier League side at bay for most of the contest.

Villa did think they’d be able to make a breakthrough on the 55th minute after they were awarded a penalty. However, a VAR check ruled it out and the game went on.

Despite the resilient defensive efforts from the Bosnians, they eventually caved in with just minutes to go. John McGinn scored a 94th minute winner as he headed home a Matty Cash cross.

Emery’s men had completely peppered the Zrinjski net, and finally found a winner with their 27th attempt at goal. This victory marked Villa’s first win in a European group stage match since 2008.

It was a deserved three points in the end for the Premier League side, one that would have tested the patience of many in the packed out Villa Park. But, their hard work payed off with what could be a vital result in the longevity of Group E.

Next up for the West Midlands side in Europe is AZ Alkmaar.
