England manager Gareth Southgate gave his say on the controversial use of VAR in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, stating he is far from a fan.
The incident in North London has been one of the most talked about controversies within the sport in recent history after Luis Diaz was denied a perfectly legitimate goal by VAR.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) later released a statement admitting a ‘significant human error’ was behind the botched decision in yet another terrible look for the technology.
Southgate gave his opinion on the matter during Thursday afternoon’s press conference, where he unveiled the England squad for October’s matches against Australia and Italy.
He said: “When you say I was at the forefront, I wasn’t for it. My first experience of it, we’re still not sure if the Jesse Lingard goal that knocked us out of a semi-final was legit or not.
“I don’t like it [VAR]. I think we should just accept referee decisions. But I also know that we’re unlikely to go back to a world where we don’t have technology as part of that decision-making process.
“It was never going to resolve every issue and I don’t think there’s any solution that will achieve that.”

The 53-year-old spoke about the decision which saw a Lingard goal wrongfully ruled out against the Netherlands in the Nations League semi-final four years ago and has joined many leading figures in football by voicing his disapproval of VAR.
