Newcastle United cruised to a 4-1 victory against European giants PSG to mark the club’s first win in the Champions League since 2003 on a magical night at St. James’ Park.
The hosts took the lead after just 16 minutes on Tyneside, capitalising on a poor clearance from Marquinhos which rebounded off the head of Bruno Guimaraes and fell straight into the stride of Alexander Isak.
The Swede fired a venomous shot at Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks, which the Italian spilled and Miguel Almiron followed up to place one in the bottom corner with elite precision.
Eddie Howe’s side doubled their lead five minutes from the half following pandemonium inside the PSG area, resulting in Guimaraes’ delivery being headed across the line by Dan Burn despite Donnarumma’s best attempt at reducing the deficit.
Local lad Sean Longstaff lived out his childhood dreams by making it 3-0 shortly after the restart, latching onto Kieran Trippier’s through ball and finding the back of the net from a tight angle at the near post.
Lucas Hernandez grabbed a consolation for the visitors six minutes later but it was to no avail and Newcastle added a fourth in injury time thanks to a superb long-range effort from centre-back Fabian Schar.

According to Champions League betting sites, Newcastle’s odds to win the competition have shortened to 25/1 from 33s following Wednesday’s remarkable win – whilst PSG’s drifted from 14s to 16/1 after the setback in Group F.
The Geordies sit in first place after two games with PSG in second, AC Milan in third and Borussia Dortmund in fourth. Howe’s men will welcome Borussia Dortmund to the North East of England in three weeks on Matchday 3.
The result marked Newcastle’s biggest ever win in the Champions League, 7,525 days removed from their last victory in the competition – a comfortable home outing against Bayer Leverkusen, winning 3-1 on February 26th 2003.
According to Opta, in Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff, Newcastle have had two different English goalscorers in a single Champions League game for a second time – the first being vs Dynamo Kyiv in December 1997 (John Barnes and Stuart Pearce).
