Kieran Trippier is tasked with perhaps the most difficult battle of his career this evening as he’s attempting to stop world talent Kylian Mbappe.
PSG visit St James’ Park in the Champions League group stage for the first ever head-to-head in its club history. The last time Newcastle played a home game in the Champions League was a 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in 2003.
Trippier’s son Jacob has been winding his father up ahead of the game by making his intentions clear that he is only interested in the France forward.
“He’s obsessed with him, always watching his clips on YouTube,” said 33-year-old Trippier.
The defender joked his son wanted to walk out with Mbappe instead of him.
“I wasn’t really happy with that,” Trippier added. “I said to him, ‘If you get to walk out with Mbappe, you don’t look at me in the tunnel’.”
Trippier has faced Mbappe before but the forward has evolved since then and has become a different animal.
Mbappe has won five Ligue 1 titles and lifted the World Cup in 2018 with France. He also scored a hattrick in France’s recent World Cup final defeat by Argentina.
“I played against him – I think it might have been his debut game for Monaco – when I was at Tottenham, and I played against him for England on my debut. It’s quite a few years ago,” said Trippier.
“This is football. These are the games you want as a player, playing in the Champions League, playing against the best players, the best teams. PSG have got unbelievable players in the team.
“Of course we need to recognise that Mbappe is one of the best players in the world, but they’ve got quality all over the pitch and we can’t be too fixed on them.
“We need to play our way because on our day, we can hurt anyone.”
Eddie Howe is also excited for Wednesday night’s game but is fearful emotions might get the best out of some players.
“I can’t wait to experience the home atmosphere and what our fans create,” said Howe.
“I think it will be a really memorable night and hopefully our performance will make it that way, too. The fans will bring their positivity, noise, enthusiasm and love for the game. It’s up to us to use that powerfully and positively on the pitch. You can use too much emotion on the pitch, but I think we’ve been getting that balance right at home.”
